Several apps and services make it easy to turn that perfect video snippet into an animated GIF file that you can share by text message or email.

Q. How can I make one of those looping GIFs from a video clip on my phone?

A. If you have a short video on your phone that you would like to transform into an animated GIF, using an app to edit and convert the file is one way to do so. Browse your phone's app store to see what is available. Many GIF-making tools list themselves as free products, but you usually have to pay a few dollars as an in-app purchase if you want to work without advertisements on the screen or remove the app developer's watermark from your finished creation.

Once you have selected and installed a GIF-making app on your phone, you typically start the process by opening the new app, pointing it to your phone's photo album and selecting the video clip you want to convert to an animated GIF. Depending on the app you are using, you may have the chance to trim the clip down to just a few important seconds of action or to indicate how many times you want the animation to repeat (or "loop") when played.

Some apps also provide options to set image quality and file size when you export the finished GIF. Lower-quality files tend to work better for mobile messaging because they upload more quickly and eat through less of your data plan.

You can also make video loops or animated GIFs from iOS Live Photos and through tools offered in social media apps such as Instagram, Snapchat and Tumblr. Over the past several years, animated GIFs have become increasingly popular around the world as a way to share a reaction or an important moment, especially in text messages, on social media and in chat apps.

The looping, soundless GIF files work on just about any platform, and libraries of the files have been built into some third-party keyboards and other apps for quick access when texting.

Several websites, including EzGif, also offer to convert video clips into animated GIFs, but you need to be comfortable uploading a personal file to a public web page. Giphy, a popular GIF repository, also hosts its own online conversion page, and even has its own studio to professionally create new material for clients.
